How to Attach a Headboard to a Hollywood Bed

Headboards can be a major design feature in a bedroom. They might be no higher than the pillows at the head of the bed, or they may stretch to the ceiling, serving as a dramatic backdrop to bed curtains. Headboards can be attached to an existing bed frame, such as a Hollywood bed frame.

A Hollywood bed frame (a metal frame system) can serve as the foundation for a headboard. There are three primary methods for securing the headboard to the metal frame.

Things You'll Need

  • Headboard brackets
  • Drill
  • Socket wrench or adjustable wrench
  • Bolts, washers and nuts
  • Measuring tape
  • Skill saw
  • Bed-width board, 1 inch thick by 12 inch wide
  • Screws

Instructions

  1. Option 1: Headboard Brackets

    • 1

Purchase a set of headboard brackets made specifically for your Hollywood bed frame.

    • 2

Prepare brackets and headboard per manufacturer's directions for installation.

    • 3

Install the headboard to the Hollywood bed frame using the brackets, and following the steps as provided in the manufacturer's directions.

Option 2: Attaching Headboard Directly to Bed Frame

    • 4

Mark placement of the bed frame's pre-drilled holes (found at the top end of the metal frame) on the headboard.

    • 5

Drill holes through the locations marked on the headboard.

    • 6

Align the headboard holes with the pre-drilled holes in the Hollywood frame.

    • 7

Attach the headboard to the frame with bolts, washers and nuts.

Option 3: Providing Additional Stability to the Headboard

    • 8

Should your headboard be large enough that end bolts only would not keep it stable,
cut a one-inch thick by 12-inch wide board the width of the Hollywood bed frame.

    • 9

Mark placement of the bed frame's pre-drilled holes (found at the top end of the metal frame) on the stability board.

    • 10

Drill holes through the locations marked on the stability board.

    • 11

Align the stability board holes with the pre-drilled holes in the Hollywood frame.

    • 12

Attach the stability board to the frame with bolts, washers and nuts.
Attach the headboard to the stability board, screwing through the stability board at eight-inch intervals in a zig-zag pattern with upper and lower rows of screws.
