Look at how low-E argon windows actually work. There is a thin, transparent coating on the windows made from metal, metallic oxide or plastic to reflect inside heat or coolness back to the interior. The spacing between panes has an inert gas such as argon.
Examine your climate. Living in the south means you are more concerned about cooling while living in the north means you want to keep heat in, though summer cooling is also a consideration.
Read energy ratings. Energy Star is a government rating program that guides window purchases.
Ask questions of window retailers. Have them explain the low-E argon system in their products.
Start a comparison chart of window brands that fit your climate. Include pricing and energy ratings.
Take your comparison chart and visit the National Fenestration Rating Council website. The Council has a number of resources to help make the right decision.
