How to Measure Windows for Blinds

Measuring a window for blinds is an extremely important step during the process of shopping for and installing blinds. This step cannot be skipped since there is no uniform size for windows, and there is no one-size-fits-all brand of blinds. Avoid some common pitfalls and a lot of frustration by following the steps below.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Pad of paper
  • Ladder (depending on the location of the window)

Go to your local home improvement store, take a look at what is available, and decide what you like and what is in your price range. For example: Some brands can be cut to specified lengths, others only come in specific pre-determined lengths. Do you want blinds that mount in front of your window, or blinds that are designed to be recessed inside the window frame? Vertical of horizontal? Roll-up?

Once you have a general idea of what you want, get a measuring tape and a paper and pencil. Create a spreadsheet with the following colums: "Height," "Top Width," "Bottom Width," "Depth," and "How Many".

Now go measure each window and fill in the spreadsheet with the appropriate data. If you measure two windows that are exactly the same, simply write a "2" in the "How Many" column.

Now take your measurements back to the home improvement store. If your blinds will be recessed inside the window frame, you'll want to find blinds that are inches less than the shortest width measurement for that window (that's why you need a top width and the bottom width). If your blinds will be mounted above the window, you'll want them to be inches more than the longest width measurement for that window.
