How to Cover a Concrete Walkway

Tools and Materials:

- Measuring Tape

- Concrete Pavers

- Edging Material

- Sand

- Rubber Mallet

- Screed Board

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Area:

- Clean the concrete surface to remove any debris or dirt.

- Sweep and rinse thoroughly. Allow to dry completely.

- Remove any existing vegetation (grass or weeds) growing in cracks.

- Repair any large cracks or holes in the concrete.

2. Measure and Layout:

- Measure and map out the area you want to cover.

- Determine the size and quantity of concrete pavers you'll need.

3. Install Edging Material:

- Install edging along the perimeter of the area. This will prevent the pavers from shifting and contain sand.

- Secure the edging firmly into the ground, ensuring it's level.

4. Spread Sand:

- Layer sand evenly over the concrete surface within the edging.

- Spread it to a depth of about 1-2 inches.

- Use a screed board to level and smooth the sand.

5. Lay the Pavers:

- Start laying concrete pavers in a straight line along the edge of the walkway.

- Interlock the pavers, ensuring they fit together snugly.

- Use a rubber mallet to gently tap the pavers into place, ensuring they are level.

6. Continue Laying Pavers:

- Work your way across the entire walkway, laying the pavers in even rows.

- Stagger the joints between rows for a more stable installation.

7. Compact:

- Once all the pavers are in place, use a rubber mallet or tamper to compact the sand between the pavers.

- This helps to secure the pavers in place.

8. Add Additional Sand:

- Sweep more dry sand over the entire surface, brushing it into the joints between the pavers.

- This helps to lock the pavers in place, preventing movement.

9. Tamp and Level:

- Tamp down the sand again, ensuring it fills all joints between the pavers.

- Use a screed board to ensure that the pavers are level.

10. Final Touches:

- Continue brushing sand into the joints between the pavers until they're completely filled.

- Remove any excess sand from the surface of the walkway.

Your covered concrete walkway is now ready! This new and improved surface is not only visually pleasing but also more durable and less prone to cracking.
