Mounting an Under-Mounted Sink

An under-mounted sink is recessed into the counter top, as opposed to a sink that is lowered onto the counter then attached to the top of it. An under-mounted sink can be installed in either the bathroom or kitchen. Wait until you obtain the particular sink that you want to install before making any cuts into the counter top as sinks have different sizes and the holes should be precise for you to properly mount the sink underneath the counter.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the template that is included with the under-mounted sink installation instructions on top of the counter top. Mark the area on the counter top to be cut for the sink hole with a pencil.

    • 2

Drill a pilot hole into the counter top with a handheld drill and a drill bit. Place the pilot hole next to, but not directly on, the cutout line.

    • 3

Insert the blade of a saber saw into the pilot hole and cut along the counter top's cutout line.

    • 4

Smooth around the perimeter of the cut hole with fine-grit sandpaper.

    • 5

Flip the counter top upside down. Invert the sink and position it on top of the counter top. Mark the spots for the holes on the counter top's underside for the mounting screws with the pencil.

    • 6

Remove the sink. Drill the mounting holes into the underside of the counter top with the handheld drill and drill bit.

    • 7

Install the faucet and drain into the sink, according to their manufacturers' instructions.

    • 8

Wipe away any debris from the underside of the counter top and from the flat lip of the under-mounted sink with a rag. Dampen the rag with rubbing alcohol and wipe around the perimeter of the counter top's sink hole and also around the sink lip.

    • 9

Apply a continuous bead of silicone caulk around the perimeter of the sink hole on the underside of the counter top.

    • 10

Invert the sink and position it on top of the underside of the counter top. Center the sink around the counter top's sink hole.

    • 11

Wipe away any excess caulk that oozes out with a rag. Install the mounting screws that secure the sink to the counter top's underside with the handheld drill and a driver bit.

    • 12

Apply a continuous bead of adhesive, as specified by the manufacturer, around the top edge of the cabinet.

    • 13

Lift the counter top and flip it over so the right side is face-up. Lower the counter top down on top of the cabinet.
