How to Finish a Basement Framing

Basements are typically concrete walls and floors with little else but they can be so much more. If you would like to finish the area to make it more hospitable, the walls are one of the main things that should be covered. To start the process, frame the wall. This is not a complicated process but will take time, depending on how big the basement is.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a basement wall from one end to the other. Cut two 2-by-4-inch boards to match this length. Measure and mark the boards and cut them with a circular saw.

    • 2

Measure the wall from the floor to the ceiling. Transfer this measurement to the floor and place the two boards on the ground so they are this distance apart. Place them on one of their 2-inch sides. You are going to build the frame on the floor and then lift it into place against the wall.

    • 3

Measure the inside space between the two boards. Cut several 2-by-4s to this length. These are the stud beams that are attached perpendicularly between the two other boards.

    • 4

Place the boards cut in Step 3 between the first two boards that are lying on the floor. Space them 16 inches apart. Attach them one at a time, to the ceiling and baseboards. Use a hammer and 3-inch nails. Check them with a square to ensure they are connected at a right angle.

    • 5

Lift the frame up to the wall once you have connected all the studs.

    • 6

Drill 3-inch screws through the ceiling plate and into the joists to attach the top. Drill 3-inch screws into the bottom to attach the base plate. If you are connecting to a concrete floor, use masonry screws. Repeat this process to frame the rest of the walls. Once framing is complete, decide how you want to finish them.
