# How to Make Wooden L-Brackets
Making a pair of wooden L-brackets provides a stable support system for any home shelving unit. While purchasing metal brackets is possible at a home-supply store, creating your own wood versions can save you money. The key to crafting a successful L-bracket is to use wood that is thick and strong enough to support the weight of your shelf. Once your brackets are completed, use them to support shelving units in a garage, shed or basement.
Things You'll Need
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
- Dust mask
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Coping saw
- Oak wood panel, 1-inch by 6-inch, 12-inches long
- Sandpaper, 120-grit
- Drill
- Drill bit, 3/8-inch

Put on a pair of work gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask to protect your skin, eyes and lungs.

Draw your L-bracket design on the piece of oak wood. Sketch the body of the bracket to resemble a boomerang — similar to a pressed L-shape metal bracket design. Draw a 5-inch by 5-inch, right-angle letter "L" shape as the outside edge of the bracket. Draw a 3-inch-deep curve for the body of the bracket.

Cut out the bracket using a coping saw. Smooth the bracket with 120-grit sandpaper.

Drill two evenly spaced 3/8-inch holes through the front, shorter end of the vertical portion of the L-bracket's body. The two holes allow for the bracket to mount with 3/8-inch bolts or screws. Repeat Steps 2 to 4 to create a second wooden L-bracket.
