How to Recycle Stainless Steel Cookware

If your stainless steel cookware is old, or if you're upgrading to a nicer set, then recycling it is a viable option. You might get little money for it, too. If your stainless steel cookware is in good and usable condition, consider donating it to a thrift store or charity, or selling it at your next yard sale for another person to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Test your stainless steel cookware with a magnet. If it is magnetic, it is a ferrous metal. If it is not magnetic, it is a non-ferrous metal.

    • 2

Contact a local recycle center, transfer station or scrap metal dealer. Use a website such as Earth911.com to help you locate one nearby, or use a phone book.

    • 3

Ask the business or recycle center if it accepts or buys ferrous or non-ferrous metal, depending on your cookware. If applicable, ask if it accepts stainless steel cookware coated with polytetrafluoroethylene, a non-stick coating, often found in the inside of stainless steel cookware. This coating is commonly known by its brand name, Teflon.

Take your cookware to the appropriate place. Note that scrap metal dealers may ask for your driver's license since theft of scrap metal for money is an issue in many communities.
