How to Install a Nailing Strip on Cabinets for Crown

When you install new cabinets yourself, the project can get overly complicated fairly fast. There might be more components involved in installing the cabinets than you realize. For example, a nailing strip is placed behind cabinets to fill the gap between the cabinet and the wall. If the cabinets have crown molding on top, then the nailing strip will need to extend even further. The process of installing the nailing strip is not complicated, but it requires some careful calculations.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the cabinet up against the wall where it is going to be installed.

    • 2

Ask someone to hold the cabinet steady while you mark the bottom and top edge on each side. Don't forget to include the crown molding on top.

    • 3

Place a 4-foot level against the marks to ensure the area you marked is perfectly level.

    • 4

Cut 1-by-2 inch wood nailing strips with a saw to fit along the line you marked.

    • 5

Place the nailing strips over the line and nail them in place with a power nailer. Install the cabinets, including the edge of the crown molding along the top, over the nailing strips.
