How to Hook Up Drains in a Double Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks with double drains share a singular drain pipe in the wall, meaning the drain pipes that initially connect to the sink drains must come together. In a double drain setup, the drain pipes must converge before sharing a single P-trap. The exact lengths of the pipes you install under the sink depend on the distance between the sink drains and the exact position of the drain pipe in the wall. Properly connecting the drain pipes is important so you don't experience leaking pipes or water backing up either drain.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap plumber’s putty around the underside of the sink drain pieces. Press the drain pieces into the openings in the bottom of the sink. Slide the rubber gaskets and the washers over the bottom of the drain pieces before threading the nuts onto the drain pieces.

    • 2

Thread the tail pieces onto the sink strainers, tightening the connections with a pipe wrench. Slide trap adapters over both traps, and then thread 90-degree pipe elbows to the trap adapters if the drain pipe in the wall sits between the drains. Thread a sanitary tee onto the tail piece of the drain that sits closest to the pipe in the wall.

    • 3

Attach a 90-degree pipe elbow to the drain pipe in the wall, and then tighten a P-trap onto the other end of the pipe elbow. Thread a pipe riser to the other end of the P-trap, and onto the sanitary tee if the drain pipe in the wall sits closer to one drain.

    • 4

Thread a double 90-degree pipe tee to the top of the pipe riser if the drain pipe in the wall sits between the two drains. Measure the gap between the pipe elbows and the double or single tee. Cut straight lengths of pipe with hacksaw to fit between the tee and the pipe elbows.

Remove the pipe sections one at a time and brush PVC primer onto the connections. Brush PVC cement onto the pipe connections once the primer dries, and then reattach the pipes. Tighten all of the connections by hand before running water for two minutes down each drain to test for leaks. Turn the nuts on any leaking joints a quarter-turn with a pipe wrench if you see any leaks.
