Stove Vent Installation

A stove vent hood provides a way to remove smoke and humidity from the kitchen air, but the vent works better if you attach it to a duct that runs through the exterior wall of your house. When you purchase a stove hood vent, choose one that comes with a wall cap piece, which has a short duct attached. Without the duct in place, the air pulled into the hood vent comes back out into your kitchen.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the hood vent upside down on a towel. Pull out the filters of the vent and remove the screws holding the hood vent’s bottom cover. Strike a hammer against a flat head screwdriver to punch out the knockout for the hood’s electrical cable and the vent duct.

    • 2

Hold the hood vent above the stove so it sits flush with the cabinetry above. Trace the outline of the electrical and duct knockouts on the wall, then set the hood vent aside.

    • 3

Drill holes at the four corners of the duct knockout tracing, pushing the drill bit until it penetrates the outside of the house. Outside, mark straight lines connecting the holes you drilled, then use a jigsaw to cut along the lines, making a hole into the kitchen.

    • 4

Apply an even bead of silicone caulk around the duct opening on the house exterior. Insert the wall cap piece that came with the hood vent into the hole you cut, then drive screws through the openings in the perimeter of the cap piece and into the house exterior.

    • 5

Turn off the electricity to the kitchen at the house’s breaker panel. Through the electrical opening you drilled in the wall, pull an electrical wire from a nearby electrical junction box behind the kitchen wall.

    • 6

Strip 6 inches of insulation off the wires, using wire strippers, then insert the wire through the knockout on the hood vent. Tighten the screws at the knockout opening, clamping the electrical wire to the hood vent.

    • 7

Hold the hood vent up where you originally placed it, lining up the knockouts with the holes in the wall. Drive wood screws through the mounting holes on the sides and top of the vent hood, anchoring it to the wall and surrounding cabinets.

    • 8

Twist the same colored wires from the vent hood and the electrical wiring in the wall together. Screw wire nuts onto the twisted wire connections. Replace the vent hood’s bottom cover and tighten the screws you previously removed. Insert the hood’s filters back in the slots, then restore electricity to the kitchen at the house’s breaker panel.
