The Size of a Fluted Sink Base Cabinet

Design Options

• There are three primary design options when selecting cabinets. The most inexpensive, widely-used option is standard, ready-made pieces. These cabinets are purchased from most home improvement stores or from a number of online sources. There are some major upsides to premade products, particularly the low cost and quick availability. Downsides include the somewhat limited range of colors and styles, and the use of fillers means an increase in wasted space. Custom order cabinets come with a high price tag and sometimes long wait for delivery. Special orders are specifically measured to fit the space, but such an undertaking is not possible with most reconstruction budgets. The third option requires mixing standard and custom pieces for a good fit with a lower cost.

Sink Cabinetry

• A sink cabinet is a specially designed piece that features a fluted edge. This edge will make room for mounting the sink. The dimensions of fluted sink cabinets are going to be similar to those of other base cabinets so they fit together smoothly. The standard measurements for premade base cabinets are 36 inches wide and 24 inches deep. If the sink cabinet is intended to sit in a corner, the dimensions are a bit larger to accommodate the size of the sink and associated plumbing and usually measure 36 inches by 36 inches. Custom designs will measure as large as 42 inches wide and 42 inches deep, an ideal size for a double-bowl sink.

Standard Base Cabinets

• All base cabinets, regardless of the manufacturer, have standard dimensions. The standard depth for base cabinets is 24 inches, measured from the front of the cabinet to the back. This is essential when selecting a sink style and cabinet to prevent having areas that stick out further than others. The standard height prior to the addition of a countertop is 34 ½ inches, 36 once the countertop is in place. Width is going to vary a bit and start as narrow as 9 inches, reaching a maximum of 36 inches. Most manufacturers will offer widths in that increase in increments of 3 inches, while others measure every 6 inches.

Standard Overhead Cabinets

• The heights and widths of overhead cabinets will vary more than those intended for use as base cabinets. This variation aids in working around windows, appliances and other architectural aspects. There are two standard depths, 12 and 24 inches. The minimum height is usually 12 inches and, like lower cabinets, increases in 3-inch increments with a maximum height of 42 inches. Most manufacturers will produce taller cabinets intended to fill space around the refrigerator, which can be as tall as 96 inches.
