DIY Kitchen Lighting From Fluorescent to Recessed

Many homes are built with functional but unattractive fluorescent lighting fixtures on the ceiling. Replacing the fluorescent fixture with recessed lighting can add a distinctive touch to your kitchen. While there's some work involved in making the conversion, your task is simplified by the fact that the wiring for the lights is already in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the power off to the existing fluorescent fixture at the electrical circuit breaker panel.

    • 2

Remove the cover from the fluorescent fixture and take out the lighting tubes. Locate the screws on the fixture that secure it to the ceiling. Remove the screws and lower the fixture. Twist off the wire nuts connecting wiring to the fluorescent fixture.

    • 3

Loosen the screws holding the lighting fixture box to the ceiling joist. Pull the box out of the ceiling.

    • 4

Cut an opening in the ceiling for the new light with a keyhole saw at the location of the old outlet box using the template provided with the light.

    • 5

Connect the home wiring to the wiring of the new recessed light with wire nuts. Place the lighting fixture into the ceiling and attach it to the ceiling joist with the supplied brackets and screws.

Snap the trim ring for the recessed light over the bottom edge of the light fixture.
