How to Make a Plywood Divider

If you have one large room that you want to use as two small rooms, but don't want to go to the expense and trouble of major renovations, consider building a plywood divider than can act as an attractive and versatile accent within your living space. In many ways, a divider is better than a wall, because you can put it away when you would rather have a single large room.

Instructions

  Cut three or more pieces of plywood to your desired size. A useful size is 24 inches wide by 72 inches tall. A width of 24 inches allows you to get two panels out of the width of a standard piece of plywood. A height of 72 inches puts the screen above eye level, creating a privacy screen.

  Improve the appearance of the plywood if you don't like how it looks by painting it or by covering it with a fabric of your choice.

  Screw two hinges to the side of a piece of plywood, one 8 inches from the bottom and the other 8 inches from the top.

  Screw the other side of these hinges to the side of another piece of plywood, being careful to align the two pieces of plywood so that they are even.

  Hinge additional pieces of plywood together in the same way until you have a screen of the desired size and number of panels.

  Use the screen by spreading it across the center of the room. Leave enough of an angle between the panels so it is stable. If you try to stand all the panels up in a straight line, they will fall over.
