How to Build a Window Seat Box

Large windows in bedrooms or sitting areas within a household look so much better with a built-in window seat. It is a great place for relaxing, working in the sunshine or nice breeze or reading. It can also be used for storage purposes if you make the box hollow and provide a lid for it.

Instructions

Choose a roomy area to create the window seat. Make sure it is not too cluttered and can be a relaxation area if you need it to be. Measure the area for the window seat by measuring the width of the window and the height between the window and the floor. Five sheets of wood are necessary to build the window seat.

    • 2

Trim the wood sheets with the handsaw to fit. The first piece of wood is the front part of the window seat box and fits the length of the window's bottom but is 6 inches lower. This piece is the largest and most important. The sides of the window seat box will be the smallest pieces and are the same height as the first piece but will only be half the length. The last two pieces are the window seat's bottom and lid. These are identical sizes; they match the length of the bottom of the window pane and have the same width as the two side pieces.

    • 3

Mark the measurements on the wall with the writing utensil. If there is wall molding where the floor meets the bottom of the wall, use the hand saw to cut off the section of molding where the window seat will be firmly against the wall.

    • 4

Use the screwdriver to screw the two side pieces into the piece of wood that will be the bottom of the window seat box, going up through the bottom piece into the bottom of the other two.

    • 5

Overlap the bottom of the front piece of wood to the front edge of the bottom piece. Use the screwdriver to screw these pieces together and secure it. Next, secure the two side pieces to the front piece with the screwdriver. When it's completed, it will look like a box with three sides.

    • 6

Cut a square from the edge of the last piece of wood, which will be the lid. This square will have to be large enough for adult arms to reach into. There should be a frame of wood around the other edges for support.

    • 7

Use the screwdriver to attach the hinges to the back part of the open square. Attach the remaining hinge parts to the cut-out wooden square. Attach the square back to the top of the window seat. It should resemble a dog door.

Push the window seat box securely against the wall right under the window. If desired, use paint, stain or varnish to personalize the window seat to match your house.
