Ideas for Mosaic Steps for an RV

A mosaic is a type of art that depicts broken pieces of similar objects arranged in a decorative pattern. The components that make up a mosaic are often durable materials such as stone and tile, which makes the design suitable as an outdoor walking surface. Applying mosaic to moveable RV steps not only provides a flat, weather resistant surface for entering the RV, but they also create a visually appealing focal point for the front of the RV.
  1. Ceramic

    • Ceramic tiles are available in a variety of shapes, patterns and colors, giving you the most design freedom for creating mosaic steps. Measure the area from the ground to the RV and construct a series of steps from wood to create a single unit of steps that you can take in and out of the RV. Cover the ceramic tiles one at a time with a towel and break them with a hammer. Apply a heavy layer of grout to the exterior walls of the stairs and add the broken tile pieces in your chosen pattern. Add a weather resistant glaze over the steps once the grout is dry.

    Stone

    • A stone mosaic will result in more natural looking steps that will blend into the outdoor surroundings. Choose flat stones that are about 1/2 inch thick. Flagstone or stone tiles such as marble or granite work well. Broken and discarded stone tiles are often offered at discounted prices at home improvement stores. Use large fragments to produce an end product that mimics a stone walkway design. Once you've created your removable steps unit, cover the unit in grout, place the broken pieces of stone into the grout in the desired pattern and cover any sharp corners with extra grout.

    Glass

    • Safety glass adds a unique appeal to mosaics because its transparency generates visual depth. Consider painting your wood steps a single color or texture that you want to show through the bits of glass in the mosaic. Add the safety glass pieces to the steps after the paint dries and before you add the grout, using a clear adhesive to hold them in place. Place the safety glass fragments in close proximity to one another and add grout until the gaps are filled in but the grout does not exceed the glass height.

    Plastic

    • Plastic is extremely difficult for the earth's elements to break down naturally in landfills. However, this durability makes plastic ideal for mosaic steps, giving you an eco-friendly choice for your unused plastic. Cut old credit cards and other flat plastic into small squares. Paint the wood steps a color of your choice and glue the square plastic fragments to the stairs. Leave only very small spaces between each piece so the walking surface remains flat. Apply a weather resistant glaze over the entire staircase.
