How to Remove a Prefab Fireplace

Safety Precautions

- Shut off the gas or electric supply to the fireplace.

- If the fireplace is connected to a chimney, make sure the damper is closed.

- Wear safety glasses and gloves when working with the fireplace.

Tools and Materials Needed

- Pry bar

- Hammer

- Screwdriver

- Utility knife

- Vacuum cleaner

- Garbage bags

- Paint stripper or solvent

Instructions:

1. Remove the Mantel: Begin by removing the mantel if your fireplace has one. Use a pry bar to gently pry the mantel away from the wall, taking care not to damage surrounding paint or trim.

2. Dismantle the Hearth: If the fireplace features a raised hearth, you'll need to dismantle it. Using a pry bar and hammer, carefully pry up the hearth tiles and remove them. Set the tiles aside in a safe location for possible reuse or disposal.

3. Disconnect the Gas or Electric Supply Line: If your fireplace is gas or electric, disconnect the supply line. For gas fireplaces, turn off the gas supply and use a wrench to disconnect the gas line. For electric fireplaces, unplug the electrical outlet.

4. Remove the Fireplace Mantel and Surround: Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the fireplace mantel in place. Once removed, gently lift the mantel and set it aside. Next, remove any other decorative trim around the fireplace surround and take it off.

5. Remove the Fireplace Surround: If the fireplace surround is separate from the wall, use a pry bar and hammer to carefully remove it. Start at the corners and work your way inward. Be careful not to damage the surrounding walls or paint.

6. Clean the Area: Use a broom and dustpan or a vacuum cleaner to remove any debris from the area. You can also use paint stripper or solvent to clean any leftover adhesive from the dismantled parts.

7. Dispose of the Materials: Bag and label all debris and materials carefully. Check with your local waste disposal agency for specific guidelines.

Remember, if at any point you feel the task is beyond your comfort or expertise, consider hiring a professional with experience in home remodeling or demolition.
