Step 1: Measure the Hearth Area:
- Measure the area where you want to install the Durock hearth lining. Make sure to account for the hearth extension required by local building codes.
Step 2: Cut Durock to Size:
- Use the utility knife to score the Durock board and snap it along the scored line to cut pieces to the desired size. Wear safety glasses while cutting Durock.
Step 3: Install Durock:
- Place the cut Durock boards over the hearth area. Make sure they fit snugly together and cover the entire hearth.
Step 4: Screw Durock to Subfloor:

Step 5: Secure Boards to Walls:
- Extend the Durock boards up to the fireplace opening.
- Screw through the Durock into the wall studs behind it to secure it in place.
Step 6: Install Trim (Optional):

Step 8: Apply a Finish (Optional):
- A cement board sealer can be applied to the Durock for additional protection and a more polished look. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying the sealer.
Precautions:
- Always wear gloves when handling and cutting Durock to prevent cuts from the sharp edges.
- Use proper safety equipment such as safety glasses to protect yourself from debris.
- Durock is a heavy material, so take caution when moving and handling the boards to avoid injury.
