How to Paint a Plaster Fireplace Surround

## Step 1: Clean and Prepare the Surface

- Remove any furniture, rugs, or other items that may be in the way.

- Protect surrounding surfaces with painter's tape.

Step 2: Sand the Surface

- Using 120-grit sandpaper lightly sand the plaster surface. This will help roughen the smooth surface of the plaster and create a better bonding surface for the paint.

- Focus on any areas that may be peeling, chipping or damaged.

Step 3: Repair Imperfections (If Necessary)

- Use a putty knife to fill any holes or cracks in the plaster. Ensure the putty is made for plaster surfaces and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

- Sand repaired areas until they are smooth and level with the rest of the surface.

Step 4: Prime the Surface

- Apply a primer specifically formulated for plaster.

- This will create a good bonding surface for the paint, ensure the paint adheres evenly and prevent any stains or marks from bleeding through.

- Allow the primer to dry completely, refer to the manufacturer's instructions on drying time.

Step 5: Paint the Fireplace Surround

- Choose a quality interior paint that is suitable for plaster surfaces.

- For a smooth finish use a brush or roller specifically recommended for the paint you have chosen.

- Apply the paint in even, thin coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

Step 6: Apply Second Coat of Paint (if Necessary)

- If needed apply a second coat of paint to ensure complete coverage.

- Allow this to dry completely as well before moving onto any finishing touches.

Step 7: Touch ups and Finishing

- Once the paint is dry inspect closely and touch up any areas that might need extra attention, use a small brush for detailed work.

- Remove any painter's tape and protectants used during the painting process.

- Replace furniture and other items to your desired decor arrangement.
