Locate a place on the house wall to connect the end or side of the carport. Identify and mark joists, wall caps or studs that can be used to support the carport frame. Strip siding from the wall to expose the wood sheathing. Leave any waterproofing membrane or house wrap intact.
Fasten a 2-by-6-inch ledger board to the wall temporarily with 16d framing nails and a hammer. Use a level to set it level the width or length of the carport connection. Mark locations of house framing and drill pilot holes through the ledger into the framing with a 3/8-inch bit. Fasten the ledger with 1/2-inch lag bolts, driven with a ratchet wrench into the house framing.
Connect the carport frame to the ledger. Use long wood screws if the carport frame is wood; drive 3-inch galvanized screws with a screw gun through 2-by-4-inch or 2-by-6-inch carport framing, for instance. Fasten a metal-framed carport side by drilling holes through the metal support and securing it to the ledger with long screws.
Butt the carport roof tightly against the wall, if possible, and install metal flashing to seal the seam between carport roof and house. Use wide metal flashing between roof and wall if the carport is built in such a way its roof edge will not touch the house wall. Fasten flashing to both roof and wall with wide-headed flashing nails and cover it with shingles or other roofing and wall siding.
