How to Install Stone on a Stucco House

Updating the front of a stucco house with stone is a project that will add value to your home. Choose flat stones that are designed for walls and attach them similar to attaching brick. Lighter weight stones adhere better to the mortar than large, heavy stones. Mix shades and sizes for a custom look that matches or complements the siding and trim of the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig out about 6 inches of soil away from the home foundation. Spray the foundation and wall with a pressure washer to remove residue.

    • 2

Inspect the stucco to ensure there are no loose or crumbling areas that require repair before you can install stone.

    • 3

Apply about 1/2 inch of mortar to the footing of the home to the same width of the flashing using a masonry trowel. Press the metal flashing strips into the mortar to hold them in place. Drill a pilot hole through the screw holes in the flashing using a carbide drill bit. Screw the flashing to the wall using the pilot holes as a guide.

    • 4

Staple tar paper to the stucco surface to protect the wall from moisture.

    • 5

Drill pilot holes into the wall every 18 inches vertical and 36 inches horizontal and screw metal wall ties in place to support the stone wall.

    • 6

Spread a 1- to 2-inch thick layer of mortar on the wall in a 2- to 3-foot area, starting at the bottom along the flashing. The amount you apply varies with the thickness of the stone Press the stones into the mortar to hold them in place, mixing sizes and shapes to create a pleasing appearance.

    • 7

Mix small stones and pebbles into the mortar and use it to fill in any gaps or spaces between irregularly shaped stones.

    • 8

Insert 2-inch-long pieces of 1/4-inch rubber tubing into the mortar along the center area of the wall at a spacing of about 2 feet while the mortar is wet. Let the mortar dry for at least one week, then pull out the rubber tubes to create drainage holes to release water that gets between the stone and the wall.
