Materials Needed:
- Garden hose or pressure washer
- Stiff-bristled brush
- Commercial mold and mildew remover or a homemade solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water)
- Safety goggles
- Rubber gloves
- Drop cloth
Steps:
1. Prepare the Area:
- Begin by clearing the area around the brickwork to allow for easy access. Place a drop cloth below the brickwork to catch any falling debris.
2. Remove Loose Dirt:
- Use a garden hose with a gentle stream of water to rinse off any loose dirt and debris from the brick surface.
3. Apply Mold Remover:
- Mix the commercial mold and mildew remover according to the manufacturer's instructions or prepare the homemade solution using 1 part bleach and 4 parts water.
- Wear safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself.
- Apply the mold remover or homemade solution liberally to the mold and moss-affected areas.
- Allow the solution to sit for the recommended amount of time specified by the product instructions or at least 15 minutes.
4. Scrub the Brickwork:
- Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the brickwork thoroughly. Work in small sections and start from the bottom, moving upwards.
- Be sure to pay close attention to areas with heavy mold and moss growth.
- Scrub in the direction of the brick's grout lines to ensure you reach all areas.
5. Rinse Off:
- Thoroughly rinse the brickwork with water from a garden hose to remove any mold remover residue and loosened dirt.
- Ensure you reach all surfaces and the areas between the bricks.
6. Inspect and Repeat:
- Inspect the brickwork for any remaining mold or moss. Repeat the process if necessary, focusing on persistent areas.
7. Rinse Again:
- Give the brickwork a final rinse with water to ensure all cleaning solution has been removed.
8. Allow to Dry:
- Let the brickwork dry completely before moving on to any other maintenance or sealing.
Important Tips:
- Test a small, inconspicuous area before applying the mold remover solution to the entire surface to ensure it doesn't damage or discolor the bricks.
- Use a pressure washer cautiously, as high pressure can damage the mortar joints between the bricks.
- Avoid using metal brushes or harsh abrasives, as they can scratch and damage the brick surface.
- If mold and moss reappear frequently, consider addressing the root cause, such as moisture problems or lack of sunlight.
- Regular maintenance and periodic cleaning can help prevent future mold and moss growth.
Safety Precautions:
- Proper ventilation is important when using chemical solutions. Open windows to ensure air circulation.
- Always wear protective gear, including safety goggles and gloves, to avoid skin and eye contact with the cleaning solution.
