How to Make a Roll Up Bamboo Curtain on a Deck

Direct morning and afternoon sun slanting underneath a lattice roof makes your deck uncomfortable if not uninhabitable. Bamboo curtains installed on the side of a covered deck provide immediate relief from harsh sunlight. The curtains roll up or down with the pull of a cord and are installed quickly and simply with few tools. Install as many bamboo curtains as necessary to make the deck comfortable. You need very little skill with tools, and the project is generally completed in a short afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the bamboo curtain on the crossbeam between two upright support posts, according to manufacturer’s directions, in the location on the deck where you wish to install it.

    • 2

Make a mark with a carpenter’s pencil along each end and along the top of the bamboo curtain frame.

    • 3

Measure the distance from each end of the curtain frame to the mounting bracket slots on the back of the right hand side of the frame and also measure the distance down from the top of the frame up to the mounting bracket slots. Perform the same measurement on the left hand side of the frame.

    • 4

Stand in front of the crossbeam where you previously marked the position of the curtain frame. From each end of the marks on the crossbeam record the corresponding marks from the curtain frame to signify where the mounting bracket slots are placed.

    • 5

Position the mounting brackets in place on the crossbeam. Use an electric drill to bore pilot holes for the mounting bracket screws and install the brackets according to the manufacturer’s directions, using the screws provided with the curtain.

    • 6

Slide the slots on the back of the bamboo curtain onto the left and right hand brackets and screw on the wingnuts to secure it in place.
