How to Fix a Corner on a Flat Roof

Unlike sloped roofs, on which gravity automatically directs the water to the roof edges, preventing pooling and water damage, flat roofs accumulate snow and rain during inclement weather. This potential accumulation makes any areas where the roofing does not lie properly against the surface of a flat roof highly vulnerable to leaks and other damage. So, if you have a flat roof with damage to a corner, fix the roof as soon as possible.

Instructions

  1. Rubber Roofing

    • 1

Pull back gently on the corner if the rubber roofing if it has come loose from the roof deck. Stop pulling the roofing when you meet resistance.

    • 2

Wet a rag with mineral spirits and wring it out to remove excess liquid. Clean the back and front sides of the rubber roofing that needs reattaching to the roof with the rag and allow the liquid to fully dry on the rubber.

    • 3

Spread bonding adhesive over the back of the rubber roofing with a putty knife in an even layer. Press the rubber roofing down into place on the roof deck and wipe away any adhesive that squeezes out from beneath the roofing.

    Flashing

    • 4

Use a rag moistened with mineral spirits to wipe off the roof beneath sections of metal flashing that have come loose on the inside or outside corners of a flat roof. Let the area dry and then apply seam primer to the roof behind the flashing with a paintbrush.

    • 5

Tap the flashing back into place against the roof corner with a hammer so that it fits tightly against the corner. Use a putty knife to apply bonding adhesive to the roof and any fixtures that the flashing sits against.

    • 6

Cut a piece of rubber roofing large enough to wrap around the top edge of the metal flashing. Apply bonding adhesive to the back of the rubber piece and press it into place on the roof so that it covers the top edge of the flashing.
