Search on the Internet for a free software program that assists you in designing your deck. The first step is choosing a shape for your deck and thet space you want the deck to occupy. Use the drag and drop tool to move around patio furniture and accessories. Select plants to decorate the space. Print out your deck design from your computer.

Choose the design for your deck based on functionality and according to the space that you have to build it in. Designs may or may not include a BBQ area, for example, and you need to consider if you wish the deck to be one level or more than one level. If you plan to eat meals on the deck often, you may want to build a deck that is level with the patio doors off your kitchen. Steps can be wide open with no railings or consist of several steps with railings.

Measure the area where you are going to build your deck so that you know the dimensions of your deck. Take a pencil in hand and a piece of paper and start experimenting with different design layouts. Make a list of the furniture pieces you want to put on the deck such as a sofa, dining table and chairs and chaise lounges. Estimate the size of the furniture pieces to see if they will fit into the space you have calculated for your deck.
