How to Cover Stone Over Red Brick on the Front of a House

Manufactured stone is a lightweight alternative to real stone, which means that the stone facade does not need as much support as real stone would. If your home already has a brick exterior, you can apply the stone facade onto the brick with a layer of mortar between, according to home improvement expert Tim Carter. Newer manufactured stone facades look similar to real stone, transforming the look of the front of your house entirely. You must apply the facade from the bottom of the house to the top.

Instructions

    • 1

Combine the mortar mix with the specified amount of water listed on the mortar mix’s bag in a bucket. Mix the mortar mix and water thoroughly with a drill equipped with a mixing paddle attachment.

    • 2

Apply mortar to the brick front of the house with a trowel. Spread the mortar around until an even, 1/2-inch-thick layer of mortar covers all of the brick.

    • 3

Press the stone onto the bottom of the brick wall in a single layer. Press corner pieces, if the stone comes with any, onto the edges of the front of the house.

    • 4

Apply mortar to the top of the line of stone if the stone’s manufacturer calls for mortar between the stones. Lay a second layer of stone on top of the first layer and repeat the process until you cover the entire front of the house.
