How to Paint a Metal Roof Decking Passivator

Passivation is a process done to metal, often steel, to inhibit corrosion and rusting. While this is highly desirable for the lifespan of the metal, it can promote paint peeling prematurely if the oily residue created by the passivator is not removed. To maintain both the anti-corrosive qualities of the passivator and retain paint adhesion, you must take the residue off but retain the passivator.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Water-soluble detergent
  • Soft scrub brush
  • Wire brush
  • Latex primer
  • Exterior acrylic paint
  • Paint brush/rollers

Instructions

    • 1

Mix one part of detergent with 10 parts of water in a bucket.

    • 2

Scrub the metal roof to both clean it and remove the oil residue. Water-based detergents will not remove the passivator like other detergents.

    • 3

Allow the roof to dry. Brush any white rust spots resulting from weathering off the surface.

    • 4

Prime the surface with a coat of latex primer designed for outdoor use. Allow the primer to dry for 30 minutes or as recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 5

Apply a coat of paint over the primer. The latex primer and acrylic paint create a solid adhesion to the cleaned metal surface.
