How to Insulate a Stem Wall

A stem wall is a concrete wall connected to a concrete footing that acts as a basement or foundation wall for a building. Insulating this wall can help make your home more energy-efficient and make the basement a more comfortable place to be. A stem wall can be insulated fairly easily with foam board insulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the walls off with a power washer. Cleaner walls allow the adhesive to hold better.

    • 2

Measure and cut the boards to fit on the wall with a utility knife.

    • 3

Spread Styrofoam adhesive on the back of the first insulation board.

    • 4

Place the board vertically against the wall in one corner. Press it firmly against the wall to allow the adhesive to get a firm grip on the concrete.

    • 5

Continue installing foam boards along the bottom of the walls until it's complete.

    • 6

Measure and cut boards for the second row. You will place these boards horizontally on the wall.

    • 7

Install the boards in the second row directly above the top of the boards in the first row, using the same technique.

    • 8

Cover the seams between the adjoining boards with installation tape.
