How to Stain a Driveway to Look Like Stone

More often than not, driveways are big, ugly, stained expanses of boring white concrete that detract from a house's beauty. If you want to make over your driveway without having to re-pave, staining it to look like stone is a great solution. It adds a warm, welcoming feel to your yard and increases curb appeal.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a clean, freshly-washed driveway. Use a power washer to remove anything that can interfere with the coloring process. Use degreasing products to remove any oil stains present.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of your driveway to get the square footage.

    • 3

Choose a water-based or acrylic stain if you're a beginner. Acid stains produce deeper, richer color but are more complicated and best left to professional contractors. Follow the instructions on the can to determine how many cans you need for the size of your driveway.

    • 4

Cover nearby walls, plants and other objects near the driveway with plastic sheeting. Use masking tape to hold it in place.

    • 5

Rent a high pressure, low volume sprayer and compressor to apply the stain to your driveway. Add the stain to the sprayer as directed.

    • 6

Spray on a smooth base coat of stain, starting in one corner. Hold the sprayer about 2 feet above the driveway while spraying. Continue with the rest of the driveway.

    • 7

Spray on one or two more coats. For a stone look, you need to spray selectively. Keep the sprayer moving as you go, saturating some areas and leaving others with just a sheer coat. Make sure you spray randomly rather than in a pattern for a natural look.

    • 8

Allow these coats to dry to assess the outcome. If you like, go back in and add accents with the sprayer to achieve a more stone-like result.

    • 9

Stay off the driveway for 24 hours while it dries.

    • 10

Seal the driveway with concrete sealant in a satin finish. Apply it with a low-nap paint roller.
