How to Design a Main Door

The main door of a home needs special attention to increase curbside appeal. A great design can enhance your home's marketability in many ways. In giving careful thought to the door itself, along with lighting and other amenities, you can design a door that looks upscale and inviting. Make sure the door makes an elegant statement, even if you have a cottage-style dwelling. Create a main entrance door that visually ties together windows, shutters and porch elements of the exterior facade.

Measure the front or side facade of the house. Document exact dimensions of windows, shutters, porch space and sidewalk width. Plan to install a single or double door that looks proportionate with the entire house facade in all respects. Sketch shutters or glass panels beside the main door to make the space appear wider, if this technique is needed.

Find a door with raised panels as one option, as you select an architectural design and material. Look at smooth-faced doors, carved wooden doors that might be recycled from a flea market, or vinyl-coated wooden doors that never require painting. Look over many pictures of doors and drive around neighborhoods to view what door styles others are using.

Use door handles and hardware to match the home's style. Plan to buy a bronze heavy-duty door handle for a two-story traditional brick house, an one option. Choose a brass door handle with brass kick plate as another option for a brick house. Create a door that fits with neighbors' doors, however, especially if you live in a condominium complex. Be sure to consult with the homeowners association rules.

Plan to install a storm door over a single main door. Use a solid-glass door with heavy decorative metal trim and scroll work to protect the glass, if this looks appropriate from curbside. Install a glass storm door with no added scroll work if a plainer look is needed. Select a storm door with a heavy-duty closure system to keep the door from slamming. Keep in mind that a storm door adds security protection, because you can lock it along with the main door. Use a storm door to make the main door more energy efficient as well.

Sketch shutters and exterior light fixtures near the main door. Obtain lighting catalogs for ideas. Add lantern-type wall lights on each side of the door as one option. Use shutters beside exterior windows on the facade to match shutters beside the main door, if appropriate. Design the main door to tie the architectural features together, but don't create the door to stand out too much. Make sure it is a focal point, however. Add planters of shrubbery or flowers to accent the overall entryway door space, if needed.
