Do it Yourself Carpet Dyeing

Replacing carpeting is a common way to remodel a room. However, carpet is expensive, and installation is time consuming. Carpet dyeing is a cheaper and easier way to renovate a room. Carpet dyeing is a do-it-yourself project that most people can perform in as little time as a weekend. Dyeing your carpet allows you the freedom to choose the color or design that fits your specific needs and wants. With carpet dyeing, the choices are practically endless. Carpet dye is available at home improvement and paint stores nationwide.

Instructions

  1. Dyeing Carpets in Solid Colors

      Remove all items from the carpet, including furniture and rugs. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove surface dirt, dust and debris.

      Shampoo the carpet using a carpet shampooer. Perform this step 24 to 48 hours before dyeing the carpet to allow the carpet to dry completely before you begin the dyeing process.

      Follow the directions on the label of your specific carpet dye. Mix the dye according to the directions.

      Apply painter's tape to the baseboards of the room to protect them from the dye.

      Pour the carpet dye into a pressure sprayer. Apply the dye to the carpet. Use long, even strokes. Do not overlap the strokes.

      Allow the dye to dry. The carpet must be completely dry before you walk on it or place the furniture or other items back into the room.

    Dyeing Designs into Carpets

      Remove all furniture and other items from the carpet. Vacuum and shampoo the carpet, and allow it to dry completely.

      Follow the directions on the label of your specific carpet dye. Mix the dye according to the directions.

      Pour the dye into a clean spray bottle.

      Place the stencil on the carpet in the area you want the design.

      Spray the dye over the top of the stencil opening. Scrub the dye into the carpet with a scrub brush. Remove the stencil carefully from the carpet.

      Move the stencil to a new location, spray the dye again, and scrub in the dye again. Continue repeating the stencil design until you have achieved the desired result.
