How to Measure to Install a Bathtub Surround

Installing a new bathtub in your home can instantly give the bathroom a fresh, new look. After you have torn out the bathroom's existing bathtub, measure the area so that when you buy a replacement tub, it will fit correctly. If you've decided to install a larger bathtub, hold off on taking the measurements until you've built the rough area in which you'll install the tub.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a tape measure on the floor to measure the length of the space designated for the bathtub. Note the measurement in inches and write it on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Turn the tape measure 90 degrees to measure the width of the bathtub enclosure. Note the measurement in inches and add it to the piece of paper.

    • 3

Measure the height of the bathtub enclosure, in inches, if you plan to buy a bathtub that has a built-in ceiling and walls. Write this measurement on the piece of paper.

    • 4

Take the measurements to a plumbing store and browse through the bathtubs that will fit the enclosure in your bathroom. Standard tubs are typically 60 inches in length. If your enclosure is this length, it will be relatively easy to find a number of replacement options.
