How to Remove a Tub to Install a Shower

Removing a bathtub at home -- whether to replace it with a new tub or in preparation with replacing it with a shower unit -- generally is not recommended for the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer. Bathtubs are heavy and cumbersome, and removal requires demolition around the area of the tub where it is set into the floor. Additionally, you have to make sure the plumbing is dealt with correctly, otherwise you risk flooding. However, if you feel comfortable with large, labor-intensive projects and feel comfortable with basic plumbing, you can remove an old tub with about 5 to 6 hours’ work.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off your water supply at the main valve, and then, if necessary, shut off the water valves to the bathtub.

    • 2

Remove the bathtub fill spout. Some spouts twist off, while others require a wrench. Use an Allan wrench or screwdriver to remove the handles.

    • 3

      Put on safety goggles.

    • 4

Crack a porcelain tub into several pieces using the sledgehammer. Breaking the tub in this way makes it easier to remove and to carry out for disposal. Use the pry bar to pull up the edges of the tub from the floor.

    • 5

Vacuum up any porcelain shards and dust using the shop vacuum.

    • 6

Place the wood down on the bathroom floor next to the bathtub, if your bathtub is steel or cast iron. Edge the pry bar under the edge of the tub over the wood and pull. The wood helps protect your bathroom floor from scratches or cracks left by the pry bar.

    • 7

Pull the tub straight up, using the assistance of at least one partner. Carry the tub out for recycling or disposal.
