How to Get Rid of a Tulip Poplar Stump

Tulip poplar is another common name for the yellow-poplar, or Liriodendron tulipifera L. The name derives from the attractive tulip shape of the flowers. However, the tulip poplar is really a member of the magnolia family. After a tulip poplar tree is cut down, its decaying stump is not attractive. Nevertheless, aesthetics is not the only reason to remove it, as new trees can sprout from a tulip poplar stump. But removing its stump is not always easy. A mature tulip poplar can reach from 3 to 8 feet in diameter.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the tulip poplar stump off as close to the ground as possible using a chain saw or axe.

    • 2

Position a stump grinder on one side of the stump. Begin grinding the stump by moving the stump grinder slowly from left to right on what is left of the tulip poplar base.

    • 3

Continue grinding the remainder by moving the stump grinder to a new position as you finish with one area. Keep going until you remove the entire tulip poplar stump.

    • 4

Rake up the wood chips left by the stump grinder and place them in a mulch pile or dispose of them.

    • 5

Fill in the hole left by the stump with dirt and plant as desired with grass, flowers or landscaping plants.
