Slip the gloves onto your hands before handling the papyrus plant to avoid injury from sharp fronds.
Examine the papyrus regularly, looking for aging culms turning brown in color. When you find foliage fading and discoloring, cut the culms off at the base of the papyrus just above the crown at soil level.
Remove the entire culm from the papyrus and place it into the bucket. Remove as many discolored culms as necessary and collect them in the bucket.
Discard the foliage in the trash or in a compost bin.
