How to Build a Terrarium

What is a terrarium?

A terrarium is a sealed glass container that creates a miniature ecosystem for plants. Terrariums are a popular way to display plants indoors, and they can be a great way to add a touch of nature to your home.

What plants can I use in a terrarium?

You can use a wide variety of plants in a terrarium, but some plants are better suited for this type of environment than others. Good terrarium plants include:

- Air plants (Tillandsia spp.)

- Baby tears (Soleirolia soleirolii)

- Fittonia (Fittonia albivenis)

- Maidenhair fern (Adiantum raddianum)

- Moss

- Peperomia (Peperomia spp.)

- Polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya)

- Prayer plant (Maranta leuconeura)

- Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)

How to build a terrarium:

1. Choose a container. The best containers for terrariums are made of glass or clear plastic. Glass containers provide a better view of the plants inside, and they allow light to pass through more easily.

- Choose a container that is large enough to fit your plants comfortably, but not so large that it becomes overcrowded.

2. Add a drainage layer. The drainage layer helps to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged, which can lead to root rot. Add a layer of gravel, small rocks, or broken pottery to the bottom of the container.

3. Add soil. Use a potting soil that is specifically designed for terrariums. Terrarium soil is usually a mixture of peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite. These ingredients help to create a well-draining soil that is also rich in nutrients.

4. Arrange your plants. When arranging your plants, consider their size, shape, and color. You want to create a visually interesting arrangement that looks natural.

5. Water your plants. Water your plants lightly, until the soil is evenly moist. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.

6. Close the container. Place the lid on the container and seal it tightly. This will help to create a humid environment for the plants.

Caring for your terrarium:

Terrariums are relatively easy to care for, but there are a few things you need to do to keep them healthy.

- Mist your plants regularly to provide them with moisture.

- Water every 2-3 weeks based on your plant’s preferences

- Keep your terrarium in a bright location, but out of direct sunlight.

- Prune your plants regularly to keep them from becoming overcrowded.

- Fertilize your plants once a month with a water-soluble fertilizer.

With proper care, your terrarium can thrive for years to come.
