How To Burn Leaves for Fragrance

To burn leaves for fragrance, you'll need to dry them first, then crumble or powder them to use as incense. Use an incense burner that is made to burn loose or herbal incense. The burner has a bed for sand and a charcoal briquette. The briquette is round and dimpled to hold the incense while it burns. You can use any type of leaves, including tree and herbal leaves.

Instructions

  1. Dry the Leaves

    • 1

Remove the stems from the leaves, using the scissors.

    • 2

Lay the leaves between two paper towels and let sit for 24 hours. Thicker leaves may need more time to sit out to allow the excess moisture to disperse.

    • 3

Place the leaves between two more paper towels and microwave on high for one to two minutes.

    Burn the Leaves

    • 4

Crumble the leaves or pulverize them into powder, using the mortar and pestle.

    • 5

Pour sand into the incense burner. The sand insulates it from the burning charcoal.

    • 6

Hold the charcoal with the tongs and light it by applying flame to the side of the charcoal. The charcoal should ignite. Place it on the sand.

    • 7

Put the leaves on the charcoal when the charcoal starts to turn gray. The leaves will release their fragrance as they burn.
