Sage Leaf Identification

The distinctive leaves of the aromatic sage plant are arranged directly opposite one another on the stem of the plant, a hardy bush that normally grows to between two and three feet in height.
  1. Identification

    • The orderly leaves are the part of the plant used for the seasoning of food and medicinal purposes. "Sage leaves are oval, silvery green and have a pebbled, veined, and fuzzy appearance. The undersides of the leaves are lighter and more silver in color than the upper side of the leaf," according to a study at the Purdue University Department of Horticulture.

    Smell

    • Purple, yellow and multiple-colored leaves adorn some varieties of the sage plant. The sage leaf may be identified by its fragrance. "One quick brush of the leaves with your hands will reveal the luscious aromatic oils of sage," writes Sandra Mason of the University of Illinois Extension Service.

    Research

    • Research on the benefits of oil extract from the sage leaf continues. The University of Michigan reported on a German study that indicates the sage leaf may prevent excessive perspiration. A 50-percent reduction in sweat output was noted when patients were either infused with or consumed a dry-leaf extract of the sage leaf.
