How to Build a Cucumber Trellis With Nylon Conduit

Cucumbers are sensitive summertime plants and grow only during the warm season, but produce repeat harvests during that time. Plant them after the last frost in rich, crumbly soil and give them adequate moisture for growth. As vining plants, cucumbers grow best with support, which keeps them off the ground and encourages straight fruit growth. Build your own cucumber trellis with leftover household goods like nylon conduit to save some money.

Instructions

    • 1

Build your trellis when you plant the cucumbers for easier digging and immediate support. Cucumbers grow their vines quickly and require season-long training.

    • 2

Dig 2-foot holes at the ends of the cucumber rows for the end posts. If a row is longer than 15 feet, dig a third hole in the middle of the row for additional security. Give each row its own trellis system.

    • 3

Put the stakes in these holes and fill around the bases with dirt. Pack the dirt firmly in the hole to secure the stakes.

    • 4

Run 8- to 12-gauge wire from stake to stake, at 2 inches from the top of the stakes and 6 to 8 inches from the ground, to build two levels. Wrap the wire tightly around an end post and clip it, then run it to the next post, wrap and clip. If you have a center post, wrap the wire twice around the center post and clip it, then run to the end post.

    • 5

Stretch nylon tubing vertically between the two wire levels at each plant to give each cucumber plant an individual climbing support. Tie the tubing to the top wire, then stretch it to the bottom wire, tie and cut.
