Varieties of Zucchini

Zucchini is a vegetable from the squash and pumpkin, or Cucurbita, family. It is among the popular vegetables grown in the home garden due to relative ease of growing. Zucchini plants grow rapidly and just a couple produce enough vegetables to last the season. There are many different varieties of zucchini, a number of which are the result of the vegetable's readiness to cross breed with other members of the Cucurbita vegetables including pumpkins.
  1. Cocozelle

    • Cocozelle zucchini (Curcubita pepo) is a zucchini variety from Italy. The vegetable is rich in flavor and is dark green in color when young. As the fruit matures, it develops yellow strips down the sides. Cocozelle zucchini was referred to as cocozelle di Napoli during the 1800s. Plant zucchini seeds about 4 feet apart in warm soil. The seeds will not germinate well in cold soil. Cocozelle zucchini is ready for harvest in about 50 to 60 days from planting.

    Spineless Beauty

    • This variety of zucchini is preferred by people with sensitive skin which gets irritated from the characteristic spines found on zucchinis and zucchini plants. The foliage and stems of spineless beauty are totally devoid of spines and the plants bear fruit prolifically. The 8-inch-long zucchini is smooth and deep green in color and have a rich flavor. The seeds germinate in about six to 10 days in warm 75 degree soil. Water regularly and feed every two weeks. Don't let zucchinis grow too large as this affects quality of crop.

    • Gold rush zucchini is an early zucchini variety. The fruit is bright yellow in color and is produced prolifically on compact plants. Gold rush zucchini takes about 50 days from planting to maturity. Plant seeds directly in warm soil in late spring when there is no longer any danger of frost. You can also start the seeds indoors two to three weeks before transplanting. Harvest fruit by cutting at the stem when fruit is young. Harvesting in time ensures better and continual harvest.
