There are two types of tomatoes, based on their growth habits: determinate and indeterminate. Determinate tomatoes grow on a bush and produce all their fruit at one time. Indeterminate tomatoes, such as Brandywine, produce tomatoes throughout the growing season. If you like big, beefy tomatoes, and lots of them all season long, choose Brandywines. Start your Brandywine seeds indoors, six to eight weeks before the last frost.
Start the Brandywine seeds in sterile seed-starting potting mix. Pour the mix into individual pots and give them warm water -- between 80 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit -- until it runs from the bottom of the pots. Set the pots aside until they drain completely.
Place the Brandywine seeds on the top of the soil in each pot. Tomato seeds are small, so wet the end of a toothpick and lightly touch it to the seed to pick it up. Spacing doesn't matter, as they will be transplanted soon after germination.
Cover the seeds with a 1/4-inch layer of coarse sand. Mist the sand covering with warm water from a misting bottle. Cover the pots with plastic wrap, leaving one corner of it open to provide ventilation.
Place the pots in an area with bright, indirect sunlight that remains between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The Brandywine seeds should germinate within 10 days. Remove the plastic wrap when they sprout and move the pots into a sunny area.
