How to Make a Tomato Bucket Hanger

Have you seen on TV those commercials advertising upside down tomato planters? You do not have to purchase an upside down planter from a manufacturer. Making your own planter is easy; in fact, it may be easier than getting the number from the ad, finding your credit card and then calling and placing an order over the phone.

Things You'll Need

  • 5-gallon bucket with lid and handle
  • Utility knife
  • Potting soil
  • Started tomato plant

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 2- to 3-inch hole in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket with a utility knife. Hang the bucket by the handle low enough to see inside. Use the knife to cut a similar sized hole in the center of the bucket's lid -- this will be the watering hole.

    • 2

Place a layer of old newspaper or sphagnum moss over the hole in the bottom of the bucket. Cut a hole in the newspaper or moss for the tomato plant.

    • 3

Remove your tomato plant from its container and shake off the excess soil. Holding the plant by the roots, insert it into the hole in the newspaper or moss. Hold the plant in place and begin filling the bucket with potting soil.

    • 4

Fix the lid in place securely when the bucket is filled with soil. Thoroughly water the soil. If the soil has settled after a couple of hours, add more as necessary.
