How to Use a Topsy Turvy to Grow Strawberries

You can easily grow strawberries, a delicious and healthy fruit, with the use of a Topsy Turvy strawberry planter, also known as an upside down strawberry bag. A couple of advantages of using this method to grow strawberries include space conservation and convenience. You can hang the planter from a balcony or porch and tend to it as needed without ever having to venture out to a garden.

Things You'll Need

  • Topsy Turvy strawberry planter
  • Electric or cordless drill
  • Drill bit
  • Screw eye
  • Pre-mixed premium potting soil with slow-release fertilizer
  • Garden hose attached to a faucet with running water

Instructions

    • 1

Select a solid wood hanging site for your planter that will allow it to receive approximately 6 hours of full sun each day. Drill a hole in solid wood to accommodate a screw eye. Install the screw eye into the pre-drilled hole by turning it to the right until no threads show.

    • 2

Add pre-mixed premium potting soil with slow-release fertilizer up to the lowest level of planting ports in the bag. Plant one to two strawberry plants in each planting port. Cover the roots thoroughly with more potting soil.

    • 3

Repeat step 2 with each level of the bag. Fill the remaining portion with soil that ends approximately 2 inches from the top.

    • 4

Set your watering hose on a very slow drip. Place the nozzle into the watering lid of the planter for approximately 30 minutes or enough time to saturate the soil completely. Water the strawberries every day in hot conditions or every two to three days in moderate temperatures.
