How to Fertilize Organic Strawberries

Organic fertilizers are environmentally friendly and safe to use on food-producing plants like strawberries. The necessary nutrients that strawberries need are nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Instead of applying just any fertilizer, give the strawberries an organic fertilizer. Before adding any fertilizer, have the soil tested. The results will show you what your soil may be lacking to grow healthy, delicious strawberries for preserves, jam or eating straight from the garden.

Things You'll Need

  • Compost
  • Bonemeal
  • Bloodmeal
  • Potash or wood ash

Instructions

    • 1

Incorporate an inch of compost into the soil. Compost not only helps the soil to drain better, it provides nutrients into the soil. Be careful not to damage the roots of the strawberry plants.

    • 2

Apply bonemeal once per month beginning in June and ending in September. Follow the label directions on application amounts. Bonemeal adds phosphorus to the soil.

    • 3

Scratch bloodmeal into the soil around the strawberry plants once a month from June through September. Use the amounts specified on the package directions. Bloodmeal adds nitrogen.

    • 4

Apply potash into the soil every month from June through September. Potash provides potassium that strawberry plants need. Wood ash is also used to supply potash.

    • 5

Add organic mulch around the strawberry plants. The mulch breaks down into the soil providing nutrients to the soil.
