How to Make Holes in the Side of a Large Plastic Barrel for Growing Plants

Container gardening is a great way to grow a lot in a small space. By using more vertical space than horizontal space, you increase your growing area. A lot of people choose to use plastic barrels as containers for their gardens. These are good, reliable containers that will last year after year. It is best to choose a light-colored barrel, as the darker the color, the more heat it will absorb. Lighter-colored barrels reduce the risk of overheating or burning plants.

Things You'll Need

  • Hacksaw, reciprocating saw or Dremel tool with cutting wheel
  • Bleach
  • Dish soap
  • Drill
  • 1/2-inch drill bit
  • 1-inch to 3-inch hole saw (or hole drill bit) depending on the size hole you wish to make

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the top off of the barrel with a hacksaw, reciprocating saw or Dremel tool.

    • 2

Thoroughly wash the inside of the barrel with dish soap to remove any remaining chemicals or original contents of the barrel.

    • 3

Rinse the barrel with a solution of 1 part bleach to 4 parts hot water.

    • 4

Rinse the barrel a final time with hot water to remove all bleach and soap residue.

    • 5

Drill holes in the bottom of the barrel with a 1/2-inch drill bit. Space the holes evenly across the bottom of the barrel.

    • 6

Mark the sides of the barrel every 8 inches around and 8 inches up, starting at the bottom of the barrel side. Marks should be spaced evenly around the barrel so that there is a hole every 8 inches both vertically and horizontally.

Drill holes into the barrel with the hole saw at each hole mark. Brace the barrel up against something sturdy to prevent it from rolling while you are drilling holes into it.
