When Is a Coconut Seed Ripe?

Coconut palm is native to the South Pacific and is the most grown and used nut in the world, according to the University of Florida Extension. The crop is a major economic resource in a number of tropical countries around the world. The fruit is not only used in its fresh form but is also a source of margarine, cooking oil, cosmetics, shampoo and soap. The fruit is the seed of the tree and ripens at a certain time.
  1. Ripening Time

    • The use of the seed or fruit is the sole method of propagating new trees. The seeds are ripe when there is audible sound of sloshing on shaking. The fruit falls from the tree when it is completely ripe and given optimal conditions and loose soil, it starts to germinate and grow where it lands. The outer husk of the ripe seed is left on for germinating new plants.

    Planting in a Pot

    • Fill a 10-inch-deep container with a well-draining potting soil. Make sure that the container width is large enough to accommodate the seed or fruit. Soak the ripe coconut seed in a pail of water for about three days prior to planting. Remove the seed from water and plant in the soil with the end that was attached to the tree pointing upward. Plant deep enough to have a third of the nut above soil level.

    Planting Outside

    • You can also plant the seed directly in an outdoor location. Make sure that the selected site is in an area of partial shade and has a loose, well-draining soil. The tree adapts to a range of soil types with a pH ranging between 5.0 to 8.0. The ideal soil temperature for effective germination is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Plant the nut at a shallow depth on its side with only a third of the nut buried in soil.

    Care

    • Place the pot in a warm area with a preferred temperature of 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature above 80 degrees Fahrenheit is preferable. Water the planted seed regularly to make sure soil is moist but not wet. Water the nuts planted outdoors deeply about twice a week. Under optimal moisture and temperature, it will take about three months for the seed to germinate. Germination can take up to six months. The earliest shoot resembles a sharp, green spear.
