How to Transplant Wild Grapes

Step 1: Find the Right Wild Grape Vine

Find a wild grape vine that is healthy, vigorous, and free of disease. The vine should be at least 2 inches thick at the base and have at least 4 healthy canes.

Step 2: Prepare the Planting Site

Choose a planting site that is well-drained and has full sun to partial shade. The site should also be free of existing plants and debris.

Step 3: Dig a Hole

Dig a hole that is twice as wide and deep as the root ball of the wild grape vine.

Step 4: Amend the Soil

Amend the soil in the hole with compost or well-rotted manure to improve drainage and fertility.

Step 5: Remove the Wild Grape Vine from the Ground

Carefully dig up the wild grape vine, being sure to remove as much of the root system as possible.

Step 6: Plant the Wild Grape Vine

Set the wild grape vine in the hole and backfill the soil around it. Water the vine well.

Step 7: Stake the Wild Grape Vine

Stake the wild grape vine to support it as it grows.

Step 8: Prune the Wild Grape Vine

Prune the wild grape vine to remove dead, damaged, or diseased material.

Step 9: Water and Fertilize the Wild Grape Vine

Water the wild grape vine regularly, especially during dry weather. Fertilize the vine in spring and fall with a balanced fertilizer.

Step 10: Train the Wild Grape Vine

Train the wild grape vine to grow in the desired direction using trellises or other supports.

With a little care, your transplanted wild grape vine will thrive and produce delicious fruit for years to come.
