How to Plant Garlic in Louisiana

The most common type of garlic grown in Louisiana is softneck, such as the Creole, or Mexican white, and the Italian cultivar. According to Louisiana State University's website, Creole garlic doesn't store as well and Italian has a stronger more pungent flavor. Garlic is grown heavily in Louisiana, Texas and California in the United States.

Instructions

    • 1

Cultivate the garden planting area with a shovel or hoe to loosen the soil.

    • 2

Add 8-24-24 fertilizer to average soil and mix it in thoroughly. LSU says to use 4 to 5 pounds for every 100 feet of row.

    • 3

Create hilled rows 6 inches apart. High rows help avoid problems with soggy soil conditions.

    • 4

Divide each hilled row down the center with a furrow about 1 inch deep.

    • 5

Drop garlic cloves into the furrow 5 to 6 inches apart with the pointed, tip side up. Plant deep enough so that soil will just cover the tip of the garlic clove when fully planted.

    • 6

Push the soil together from the sides of the hilled row to close the furrow.

    • 7

Water the new row plantings the next day, enough to moisten the soil without saturating it.

    • 8

Add nitrogen one month after planting, then again in midwinter and also in midspring.
