How to Grow a Terraced Garden

A terraced garden is a suitable option for growing a garden on a hill, which typically is not an ideal situation for planting a garden. Terraced gardens look like steps and provide green foliage and flower hues that make your yard attractive. Growing a terraced garden requires creativity and strong manual dexterity when arranging the terrace’s parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a plan for your terraced garden, determining what types of plants you wish to put in the garden. Choose ground covers along with flowering plants such as roses and herbs, which are the types of shallow fiber-rooted plants appropriate for a terraced garden. Select plants such as palms, orchids and bamboo to go in your garden as well.

    • 2

Select soil for your terraced garden such as peat moss or soil rite, as these substances are light enough for use in a terraced garden. Combine existing garden soil with peat moss and manure instead if you wish to save on costs while still creating a soil that does not hold too much water.

    • 3

Dig a trench that will hold the first tier of your terraced garden at the bottom of the slope of your hill. Make the width of the trench slightly wider than the timber you will use there, and place your timber in the trench after ensuring the bottom of the trench is firmly packed.

    • 4

Dig a trench into the slope of your hill to create the sides of your terrace, making the bottom of this trench level with the bottom of your first trench. Allow the trench’s depth to be an inch thicker than your next timber, and place the timber in the trench completely around the terrace.

    • 5

Drill holes in your timbers and drive spikes through the holes and into the ground. Put a second tier of timbers on top of the first tier and spike them together. Shift soil from the back of the second tier to the front until the ground is level. Add a third tier to make sure all of the soil remains contained.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 3 through 5 for each level of your terraced garden.

    • 7

Lay burnt 2-to 4-inch bricks on the floor of your terrace, the base of your garden, to help improve the terrace’s drainage. Put a mesh wire on top of the bricks to keep the future garden’s soil from getting onto the bricks. Add your chosen terraced garden soil and plant your garden plants, following the label directions for positioning them in the soil and watering them.
