Pull the fruit toward you to verify it is ripe. The pear skin should have changed colors, and the fruit will feel firm but give slightly. Slice open the pear with a knife to examine the seeds. The seeds should be brown, not white.
Pull the fruit from the tree by holding the branch in one hand and twisting the pear away with the other. If you've harvested a pear prematurely, you'll need to ripen it.
Place the pear inside a paper bag in temperatures between 60 to 70 Fahrenheit. Store pears together since these fruits put out a gas that increases their ripening. Remove them promptly when they have fully ripened.
